Gloria Estefan To Receive 2017 Kennedy Center Honor

Singer-songwriter-actor Gloria Estefan is scheduled to be one of the five recipients to receive the 2017 Kennedy Center Honors from The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where her lifetime artistic achievements will be celebrated at the 40th annual ceremony on Sunday, December 3, 2017 in Washington, District of Columbia.
Other honorees this year include dancer and choreographer Carmen de Lavallade, hip-hop artist-actor and entertainment icon LL Cool J, television writer and producer Norman Lear, and musician and record producer Lionel Richie.

Other Latinos to receive Kennedy Center Honors include Plácido Domingo (2000), Chita Rivera (2002), Martina Arroyo (2013), Carlos Santana (2013) and Rita Moreno (2015). CBS will broadcast the gala as a two-hour prime-time special on Tuesday, December 26, 2017. For more information, click here.

HOLA Member Bochinche

Bochinche refers to “gossip”. In this sense, we use it to mention HOLA members or Friends of HOLA who are getting acting, performance or similarly artistic gigs and/or recognition in the media. Elaine Del Valleshown at right, wrote, directed, produced and stars in the short film Final Decision. Also starring Berto Colón, Elyn Jaime Jenkins and José Roldán, Jr., the film is on the film festival circuit, with a recent stop in July at the CineOdyssey Film Festival in Charlotte, North Carolina, and an upcoming stop in November at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Yvette Quintero will be acting in the Unhinged: Women's Work Short Play Festival. Produced by New Perspectives Theatre Company, the plays are written by 
Kendra Augustin, Rae Binstock, Cayenne Douglass, Holly Hepp-Galvan, Cara Hall, and Alisa Zhulina, and directed by Melody Brooks, Mary Hodges, Alex Keegan, Mary McGinley, Melissa Skirboll. The production will take place in August at the New Perspectives Studio, located in Manhattan's Garment District. For more information, click here or here.

Mónica Delgadoshown at left, is nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award from the Berlin International Film Festival 2016 (in Berlin, Germany) for her role in the feature film Bx3M (written and directed by Judith Escalona). She previously won the award in the same category for the same role at the recent International Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema Milan in Milan, Italy. For more information, click here.

Caridad de la Luz (also known by her nom de poésie et de musique La Bruja) will be performing with the Camaradas Salsa Orchestra (under the leadership of Desmar Guevara) at the 13th anniversary of the famed boîte Camaradas El Barrio, located in Manhattan's El Barrio neighborhood. Jesús E. Martínez, shown at right, was featured in the Héctor Luis Sin Censura blog (written and edited by Héctor Luis Rivera, also see below) on account of his co-starring role in the Lina Sarrello play Out There/Allá afuera. The play, directed by Michael León, was presented as part of the Broadway Bound Theater Festival in July and August at The 14th Street Y, located in Manhattan's East Village. Larissa Santiago, shown at leftwas featured in the Héctor Luis Sin Censura blog (written and edited by Héctor Luis Riveraalso see above) as a result of her co-starring role in the play Próxima parada. Written, directed and co-starring Prince Porto, the Teatro Experimental Blue Amigos production was presented in August at the Teatro Rafael Villalona at the Comisionado Dominicano de Cultura en EEUU in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood. Caridad de la Luz (also known by her nom de poésie et de musique La Bruja) was featured in the Appalachia (Virginia/Kentucky)-based daily newspaper The Coalfield Progress as a result of her starring role in the award-winning musical BETSY! (conceived and developed by Ron Short, Dudley Cocke, Beegie Adair, Rosalba Rolón and Desmar Guevara and directed by Rolón), which was developed by Roadside Theater and Pregones-PRTT.
