BIRDMAN Racks Up More Awards As It Heads Towards Oscar Gold

The feature film Birdman (or, The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, continued racking up awards as it heads into the Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars), where it has nine nominations, including one for Best Picture.

Director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki won the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Outstanding Achievement Award in the category of Feature Film for his work on Birdman. In five of the last ten years, the ASC Award winner also won the Oscar. Lubezki also won the Oscar last year for his work on Alfonso Cuarón's film Gravity. Should he win the Oscar this year, "Chivo" (as he is affectionately known) would be only the second cinematographer to win two consecutive Oscars (John Toll accomplished the feat for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart, respectively.) Re-recording mixer Frank A. Montaño and scoring mixer Gustavo Borner were part of the team that won the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Award in the category of Motion Picture - Live Action. The team also included production mixer Thomas Varga, re-recording mixer Jon Taylor, ADR mixer Jason Oliver, and Foley mixer John Sanacore. For more information, click here.

Supervising music editor Martín Hernández won the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Award in the category of Best Sound Editing in Feature Film: Music for his work on Birdman. He shares the award with music editors Terry Wilson and Will Kaplan. The score for the film was composed by Antonio Sánchez. For more information, click here.
