Oscar Isaac, Brühl, Cuarón, Other Latino Nominees at the 71st Annual Golden Globes

Nominees for the Golden Globe Awards 2014 ceremony were announced on Thursday morning, December 12, 2013 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Golden Globes honor the year's best in film and television, split into the genres of comedy (or musical) and drama.

The Golden Globe Award is an American accolade bestowed by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) recognizing excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign. The annual formal ceremony and dinner at which the awards are presented is a major part of the film industry's awards season, which culminates each year with the Academy Awards.

The first Golden Globe Awards were held in January 1944 at the 20th Century-Fox studios in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be presented on January 12, 2014, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, where they have been held annually since 1961. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will share hosting duties.

People of Latino/Hispanic descent receiving nominations include Oscar Isaac, who scored a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical for playing the title role in the film Inside Llewyn Davis. Daniel Brühl received a nomination (on the heels of his SAG Award nomination) for his role in the Ron Howard-helmed Rush. Alfonso Cuarón nabbed a nod for directing the hit film Gravity. Tony-winning composer Robert López (along with his wife Kristen Anderson-López) scored a nomination for Best Original Song for "Let It Go", sung by Idina Menzel for the film Frozen. Louis C.K. (no stranger to nominations) received another nomination for his television series "Louie" (FX). British/Spanish actress Helena Bonham Carter received raves for her role as fellow half-Brit screen icon Elizabeth Taylor in BBC America's "Burton and Taylor", and earned a nod as well. And oft-nominated Sofía Vergara received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture made for Television for her role in ABC's "Modern Family". 

This year's Golden Globe nominations were led by 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle, which scored seven nominations each, including Best Picture honors in, respectively, the drama and musical or comedy categories. On the television side, "Breaking Bad," "Downton Abbey" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" were among the top-nominated programs. Woody Allen, meanwhile, will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment" during the 2014 ceremony.
